Overview and planning

how might we help undergraduate students to unpack past experiences with failure(s)?

The Problem:
Undergraduate students often don't have a robust support system as they experience failure. More common than not, students do not have a safe space to proactively reflect upon their failures, to grow comfortable with failure, and how to move forward with them.

Proposed Solution:
Mobile application orientated around creating a digital safe space for students to be able to express and articulate their experiences with failure, while providing access to their stories to normalize experiences and the negative stigmas surrounding failure(s).

Project Timeline:
1. Empathize, Define
Revisit problem space, and define project goals while remembering to set expectations and project timeline.

2. Ideate, Prototype
Initial design ideas, sketches, build wireframes and continually iterate to improve.

3. Test, Refine
Evaluate progress and development effectiveness via usability testing. Dig through feedback, find areas of improvement and determine feasibility of implementation.

4. Reflection
Understand shortcomings of the design, continue to build opportunities to design and build solutions further.

Test Plan & Objectives: 
To understand behaviors and needs for undergraduate students to process self-defined experiences of failure. I conducted a series of remote, task-based usability studies with 3 undergraduate students.

1. Provide a description of the app concept to study participants
2. Observe participants as they perform the prototype's key tasks
3. Collect feedback to improve the experience and concept of the prototype

1. Explore different mediums of touchpoints, including audio input
2. Improve tag handling on the home and explore pages to filter through posts
3. Improve post success validation after users create posts

lessons learned and next steps

1. One size doesn't always fit all
It became increasingly obvious that student experiences throughout the country vary, and that no solution can successfully improve the experience of failure for all. Community may be more important for some students, whereas private venting may be more effective for others. Focusing on a more specific subset of undergraduate students may bring opportunities for more personalized research and rooms of improvement for Glows.

2. If I could jump back in time to do this over
I would refocus on base features to build around a more specific subset and demographic of undergraduate students. These eight weeks drove the importance of feasibility of creating potential solutions in a limited timespan.

3. We aren't done yet.
There are still areas of improvement, enhancements to be made, and features to improve the access and usability of Glows. As my experience as a designer continues to grow, I hope to bring Glows to life to support Undergraduate students across the country.
